Due to the increased number of puppy mill puppies that are being surrendered to us, we felt it important to provide a brief synopsis of information regarding the purchasing of puppies. If you are ordering a puppy over the Internet, you are purchasing from a puppy mill. If you are purchasing at a store that is located in the mall, these puppies are from a puppy mill. If you are purchasing a puppy from any store, these puppies are from a puppy mill. If you go to purchase a puppy and the "breeders" are breeding more than one breed, this is a puppy mill. Very few good breeders advertise in the paper or want ads as they usually have a waiting list for their puppies.
Good breeders only breed one breed. They are looking to improve the breed, therefore they are very careful with which dogs are being bred, the type and quality of puppies, and they will track their puppies afterwords. Good breeders, like good rescue organizations, will ask you many questions regarding you and your living situation. They will interview you as you should be interviewing them. Good breeders like good rescues are committed to their dogs for the rest of their lives and will take them back at any point.
Please do not purchase a puppy because you feel sorry for it and its current situation, as this is only contributing to the circumstances. This puppy will be quickly replaced with a new puppy from a puppy mill, thereby continuing this detrimental cycle.
